Behind The Barski

We here at Second Sundaes work hard to provide you with good decent entertainment. And while discussing ways to better serve our audience we thought, hey what about the people that actually serve them? The bartenders. Well shit, that's not a bad idea. And because Philadelphia has a plethora of beautiful and interesting bartenders we decided it might be fun for us as well. So here we are with our first installment of Behind the Barski.

On a chilly April evening, we met up with one of Silk City's finest for a drink and a chat. Twenty-three year old Michelle hails from the great state of Texas, Austin to be exact, but you'd be hard pressed to tell. No southern accent, no slow drawl, just a great smile, pretty eyes, and a quirky attitude. Michelle proved to be a great pick for our first interview, making our job a whole lot easier. She also proved to us that bartenders are cool beyond just being able to hook you up with free drinks, and that there's more to her than you can learn in an hour. Read up on Michelle, but don't just take our word for her either, met her yourself and see how she pours.

MICHELLE
Second Sundaes: So as a little girl you dreamed of moving to Philadelphia and bartending at Silk City?

Michelle: No, I really never thought I’d move to Philadelphia. I always thought I was going to go to school in Austin, which is where I’m from, and then my parents moved to TMW then I went to a college out there and then...I don’t know, I just ended up on the East Coast, which is weird. I always wanted to move around though. I’ve been everywhere in this country.

SS: Really? Hawaii?

M: Yeah my families from Hawaii so I’ve been there a bunch of times. But I’ve never been to Alaska.

SS: I was just about to ask you that. Nobody goes to Alaska. They pay you to move there, that’s how bad it is.

M: (laughs)...yeah...

SS: What do you have a passion for? (Note to self: Before answering her eyes dart around the room looking for something to have passion for.)

M: (laughs) I’m not sure right now. I have a passion for having fun but that’s about it. I kinda love art and all that cliche bullshit but I really like to have fun, talk to people, meet new people, it’s not like anything more serious than that.

SS: Well then, what do you aspire to be?

M: I’ve aspired to be lots of things but your aspiration changes as you get older. I wanted to be a plastic surgeon, I wanted to be in fashion, to work in PR, to open a restaurant, a bar, just a lot of things that I would want to do but anything I set my mind to I know I’ll do it.

SS: You’re like a chameleon.

M: Yeah, exactly.

SS: Favorite food to eat here at Silk?

M: Beet salad.

SS: Favorite drink?

M: Siembra Azule but I also like Jameson on the rocks.

SS: What do you hate, in general?

M: I hate inconsideration for other people and really ignorant people. Ignorant people are different up here from ignorant people in the South. (*Ignorant Philly people are not special, they're just that special brand of Philly ignorant)

SS: What’s your favorite music?

M: I listen to a lot of hardcore metal but I also listen to Indie and all that stuff.

SS: Do you have a favorite band right now?

M: I’m pretty excited to see this band playing at the TLA next week called The Nile and Skeleton Wish. It’s gonna be pretty cool I think. Nile’s like an old 90’s metal band.

SS: Do you have any hobbies?

M: I like to do art, write on walls, sew, and draw.

So this concludes our first installment of Behind the Barski. Stay tuned to Second Sundaes for more suprises and remember to tip your bartender. Also, don't ask her to sew your boxers, Lor tried and it didn't go over well.

Til next time!
